THE CROOK, THE LOON, HIS WIFE AND THE WALKING DEAD
It was originally known as Project Orpheus. A genuine top secret World War Two operation to communicate with the dead. It proved to be highly successful and helped the Allies win the war. But in the 1950s something went terribly wrong. That’s when the aliens from another world took over the communication system and another war entirely began.
For Gary Charlton Cheese, it all began when he was ten years old. At that time his hobbies included, sneaking into the restricted section of the local library, reading the Lazlo Woodbine novels of P. P. Penrose and attempting to raise the dead. Gary was not the kind of boy who was ever going to make his mother proud.
Gary now has a job at the local telephone exchange. Bulbsman. It isn’t much of a job, it only involves him sitting in a tiny booth all day, waiting for a bulb to light up, so he can switch it off again. But it is a job for life and it does have a pension. There’s some pretty strange stuff going on upstairs at the exchange, though. Something to do with this old project that the powers that be have got on the go again. A project now called FLATLINE. Something to do with making telephone calls to the dead.
It is all going to end very badly indeed, especially for Gary Charlton Cheese.
This is undoubtedly one of Robert Rankin’s darker novels and while it features gruesome murder, black magic, unfaithful zombie lovers, feuding aliens and double-dealing tricksters, its rollercoaster plot lacks not for “gallows humour”. Mr Rankin, however, wishes to make it absolutely clear that the views expressed by the fictional narrator, notorious psychotic necromancer Gary Charlton Cheese, are not his own. Mr Rankin has never raised the dead, nor murdered people on the grounds that they were ugly. Nor has he ever worked for the GPO as a bulbsman, although he did come close, back in the nineteen-seventies.

Robert Rankin is uniquely off-the-wall, unparalleled in his eccentricity there's no other comic fantasy author like him. Thank heavens for that. -- David Langford

The Fandom of the Operator edition by Robert Rankin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read Fandom of the Operator because of ONE blurb on the back Terry Prachett, author of the Discworld series, wrote "One of the rare guys who can always make me laugh." Well, that, and the fact that I picked it up cheap at a used booksale for charity. I won't go into the plot too much--suffice it to say that the ludicrous plot is the source of most of the humor, and alien mind control and raising the dead play a big part. It's a very silly book with more twists than an anaconda committing suicide, and nobody can rightly say they figured it out in advance. But for me it wasn't terribly satisfying. It's basically light entertainment, with a tiny touch of sex and a bit of disgusting stuff for fun. Discworld's much richer textured and funnier. I can't see it being worth the price asked here at --I think that's cause it's a UK book, and I'll bet you can get it in paperback from .uk much cheaper. If you're someone who roars at the humor of the title, you'll go for it big. But the cover blurb, from the Daily Express, says it all for me, "Everybody should read at least one Robert Rankin book in their life." Well, now I have.
I have enjoyed the handful of Robert Rankin books I've read so far. When I saw this one - with that great title - I immediately bought it. It's not horrible, but the lead character certainly is. I may be going through a stick-in-the-mud phase, but I didn't care for Gary. Beyond him being into serial killing and necrophilia with his voodoo-resurrected wife, he's generally not a likeable guy - a real jerk, in fact.
It also took almost half the book to get to the operator portion of the Fandom of the Operator book. When I'm enjoying a book, I'm okay with wandering through backstories and side tracks, but when I'm just trying to knuckle down and get through a book, it seems to drag.
If you've read other Robert Rankin books and liked them, then you probably will enjoy this one - at least to some degree. But if you've never read a Robert Rankin book, then skip over to The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse for your first sample.
Of the Rankin novels I have read, this is certainly among my favorites. Though not as popular as the successful Eddie Bear series, "The Fandom of the Operator" is a wild ride of far-fetched fiction and general silliness.
Gary Charlton Cheese is the typical slacker that finds himself at the center of a Rankin book. The book begins with the death of his favorite author and alleged family friend, P.P. Penrose. Rather than mourn, Gary and his accomplice Dave set about bringing Penrose back from the dead. Though apparently unsuccessful, a chain of events is set in motion.
Years late when Gary is employed in an absurdly meaningless job, he begins piecing some strange events together with a co-workers. Gary learns he is a blind operator to a telecommuncations network to the dead. Stunned that he has been working this system unsuspectingly, he wants to access it.
The facts stated in the review reveal little more than what is on the back of the book cover. As you would imagine, the story gets further out of control. Throw in guest appearances by Elvis, Jeff Beck, Winston Churchill, and the madness becomes more evident. With numerous laugh out loud moments, "Fandom of the Operator" finds Rankin at the top of his game.
